Lake McDonald Lodge

We didn't stay at the lodge but we stopped in for a few hours to catch the views and see the sunset! The lodge was beautiful but was too expensive for our family of 10. However it was well worth it to stop in and see the incredible views from the shore.

Did not personally stay here, but have stayed at a few other NP lodges and this one seemed no different! Super cool rustic building that has a distinct national park feel. Not necessarily 5 star hotel but that's also not really what your going for in a national park anyway! Location is incredible, and the views out the back make everything well with it!

I ended up stopping by a cute little café located inside the hotel while my family headed out for another hike. I decided to sit, relax, and order lunch—and I’m so glad I did. I ordered a sandwich that was absolutely amazing. Even though the café was packed, the servers made me feel like I was the only person there. They truly knew what they were doing, and my food came out quickly, which was wonderful. I loved being able to open the windows and feel the breeze—it added so much to the experience. The café itself was incredibly charming, with absolutely stunning views. I even ended up meeting a sweet couple while I was there, and to my surprise, I found myself starting to write my wedding vows as I sat at the table. I couldn’t be more thankful for the atmosphere—it truly made the experience special and memorable. I can’t wait to come back again. The food, the service, and the setting were all absolutely fantastic.

I both stayed in the cabins, and ate at the restaurant. The cabins are small but the bathrooms are a decent size. The restaurant is excellent, with a wide variety of food at a very reasonable prices for the location. There is a fantastic view of lake McDonald, which you may be able to enjoy, depending on which table you get in the dining room. The service staff here is excellent, providing attentive service and is very quick.

Note that rooms are rustic, typically lack air conditioning or TVs, and may have limited soundproofing. Main Lodge: Traditional hotel rooms located on the upper floors with private bathrooms. Cabins: Duplex to six-plex units located along a tree-lined path. Options range from small rooms to larger deluxe suites with sitting areas. Cobb House: A renovated lakeside building featuring three upscale suites with sitting areas and televisions. Snyder Hall: A former dormitory offering hostel-style rooms with shared bathrooms, ideal for budget-conscious travelers. Dining Options Dining at the lodge is available on a first-come, first-served basis; no reservations are accepted. Russell’s Fireside Dining Room: Serves breakfast buffets (6:30 AM–10:00 AM), lunch (11:30 AM–2:30 PM), and dinner (5:00 PM–9:30 PM) featuring Montana-inspired cuisine. Jammer Joe’s Grill & Pizzeria: Offers casual fare, including an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet and evening pizza. Lucke’s Lounge: A lakeside lounge serving Montana micro-brews and food throughout the day. Activities and Amenities The lodge serves as a primary hub for activities on the west side of the park. This place is a great start to a vacation. The rooms and buffet are not that entertaining but it forces you to get out and explore. Very rustic feel, the views are great and the environment is beautiful. Service here was very great and the staff are very kind. Would come back to stay.

The location of Lake McDonald Lodge is absolutely unbeatable. Sitting right on the shore of the lake, it offers incredible views and immediate access to one of the most beautiful parts of Glacier National Park. Waking up to that scenery is something truly special. The staff deserve a lot of praise — every interaction we had was warm, friendly, and genuinely helpful. They clearly care about making guests feel welcome. That being said, the lodge is definitely showing its age. While the historic charm is part of its appeal, the rooms and beds are in real need of investment. The mattresses are worn, the furnishings feel tired, and the overall room setup could use an update to make overnight stays more comfortable, especially given the price point. For many guests, a good night’s sleep is just as important as the scenery, and this is an area where the lodge could make a big impact with some improvements. Another consideration is how busy it gets. During our stay, the lodge felt extremely crowded, and at times it seemed like they are struggling to balance the needs of overnight guests with the large number of visitors who just come to look around. This can take away from the sense of peace you might expect from such a beautiful setting. The boat dock is located directly in front of the lodge. While it’s convenient for tours, it does detract a little from the otherwise serene lakeside view. Parking is another challenge — the lot is small, fills up quickly, and can make arrival or day trips more stressful than they should be. Overall, Lake McDonald Lodge is worth visiting for its location and wonderful staff. However, guests should be prepared for crowds, parking challenges, and rooms that feel more rustic than comfortable. With some investment in the rooms and beds, this could easily become not just a beautiful place to stay, but one that delivers a truly top-tier lodging experience in Glacier National Park.

I have been to the cabins at McDonald Lodge in Glacier National Park and they were decent for what they are. They’re not luxury accommodations by any means, but considering the remote location and the fact that you’re in the middle of a national park, they get the job done. The cabins were clean and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The beds weren’t amazing, but they were fine after a long day of hiking. The bathrooms were basic but functional, and the overall setup felt like a step above camping while still keeping you close to nature. What made it worth it was the location… just steps from Lake McDonald, with easy access to trails, boat rentals, and the lodge restaurant. It was quiet at night, and we were able to sit outside and enjoy the stars without much noise around us. If you’re expecting high-end finishes or a hotel-style experience, you might be disappointed. But if you’re looking for a simple, convenient place to sleep that keeps you inside the park and close to everything, it’s a good option. Not the best I’ve stayed in, but not terrible either… I’d stay again just for the location.
